UNISA’s Departments of Geography and Political Sciences visited the Ilanga Women’s Organisation Permaculture Project on 3 April 2008 as part of its 10th Annual Africa Day Community Outreach Initiative. The Africa Day Organising Committee was welcomed by representatives of Food & Trees for Africa who are overseeing the project. As part of the Africa Day Celebrations ten trees were donated to the project and were also planted by members of the respective departments next to the vegetable garden.
The entire Africa Day team also assisted in the initial construction of what will soon be the project’s very own nursery and greenhouse where even more seedlings will soon be cultivated by the dedicated women of Ilanga.
The Ilanga Women’s Organisation Permaculture Project is situated at Dan Kubheka Clinic, Kingsway, Springs, Ekurhuleni, Gauteng. The project is a poverty alleviation effort by nine elderly and three young women from the surrounding community. It is located on a fairly fertile loam soil that is conducive to cultivating vegetables, fruits and herb crops. The members of the project have been using this piece of land since 2001. The group is in the progress of receiving written permission from the clinic to use the land and water.
SAB providing tools and materials
SAB is now providing tools and materials and the Anglo American Chairman’s Fund is providing sponsorship for training and garden development. This is being coordinated and facilitated by greening and natural food gardening NGO Food & Trees for Africa. |
The newly developing Permaculture garden will soon be able to provide a constant supply of fresh vegetables, herbs and medicinal plants, as well as fruit for the project members and their families. It is hoped that surplus produce will be sold to the surrounding community.
Mrs Sizathu Thango is the project secretary and the Food & Trees for Africa (FTFA) facilitator is Ms Busiwa Wawa.
Project objectives
The objective of the project is to receive Permaculture training for poverty alleviation, income savings and generation, and source of good nutrition for improved health and quality of life.
