Unisa online - Initiative to improve school education in Nigeria

L-R Mr Tookemi Toogun from Accelerated Learning Systems in Nigeria, Prof Cecelia Jansen (Department: Teacher Education), Prof Trudie Steyn (Department: Further Teacher Education) and Prof Gerrit Kamper (Department: Educational Studies)

UNISA staff members in the Departments of Further Teacher Education, Teacher Education and Educational Studies in the School of Arts, Education, Languages and Communication hosted a workshop for representatives of independent schools in Nigeria on 27 and 28 March 2008. The workshop formed part of an initiative in which the Department and representatives of independent Nigerian schools are working together to improve teaching and learning in schools.

Last year Mr Tope Toogun, Director of Accelerated Learning Systems in Nigeria, approached Prof Oupa Mashile, Director of the School, with a request for collaboration between UNISA and independent schools in Nigeria. Prof Trudie Steyn, of the Department of Further Teacher Education and other interested staff members compiled a workshop programme which was submitted to Mr Toogun. He approved of the programme contents and suggested that the workshop should be presented in March and October 2008.

Topics discussed during the first workshop on 27 and 28 March 2008 included managing change, instructional leadership, creating a positive teaching and learning environment, improving your school through action research, human rights in the classroom, self-management and problem-solving skills were discussed. The second workshop is scheduled for 22 and 23 October 2008.

Mr Toogun said he hoped that UNISA staff would visit Nigerian schools and also present workshops there. Prof Steyn, in turn, concluded that the collaboration between UNISA and Nigeria is envisaged to be long-term engagement which would contribute to building a strong relationship between the two countries.
