Background
The African Library Summit 2013 is the second event of its kind and will be hosted by the Unisa Library, the IFLA (International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions) Regional Office for Africa and the IFLA Africa Section.
Primary aim The primary aim of this event is to create an opportunity for established leaders to engage on significant issues in support of quality library and information services and librarianship on the African continent. Pivotal to the discussions will be leadership of library and information services in the 21st century. The dynamic digital context in which libraries currently operate, demands highly strategic leadership.
Main objectives of the Summit:
- To establish leadership development actions for the respective library types
- To identify programmes for leadership development
- To locate African leadership development in the Digital Age
- To identify programmes pertaining to MDGs and climate change
Format of Summit: The African Library Summit 2013 will feature international speakers and local speakers from Africa, as well as interactive in-depth discussion sessions, referred to as drilldown sessions, all providing invaluable insights into a range of critical areas facing today’s professional library and information service leaders in Africa.
There will be seven drilldown sessions according to the following interest groups chosen on registration:
- African Library Associations
- Training of LIS Practitioners
- Public and Community Libraries
- School Libraries
- Academic, Research and Special Libraries
- LIS in Francophone Africa
- LIS in Lusophone Africa
Envisaged outcomes The outcomes will provide an action plan for the development of 21st century library leadership in Africa. It is envisaged that this will enable and inspire African library practitioners to enhance the provision of future services for the benefit of the wider community of library users.
