Why exactly do we need ODL research in Africa? This was the question that sparked a lively conversation between Prof Dele Braimoh, UNESCO Chair of ODL and Director of the Institute for Open and Distance Learning (IODL); Prof Tinyiko Maluleke, Executive Director: Research; and Prof Asha Singh Kanwar, Vice-President of the Commonwealth of Learning (COL).
Prof Asha Singh Kanwar became Vice-President of the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) on 1 April 2006 and assumed additional responsibility as Programme Director in April 2007. She is specifically responsible for stakeholder engagement and programme direction. Before joining COL, Prof Kanwar was a consultant in open and distance learning at UNESCO’s Regional Office for Education in Africa (BREDA) in Dakar, Senegal. Prof Kanwar’s engagement with distance education began when she joined Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) where she served as Professor, Director of the School of Humanities and Pro-Vice-Chancellor. Prof Kanwar has over 30 years of experience in teaching, research and administration.
Unisa was privileged to host Prof Kanwar at the 6th lecture in the ODL Occasional Lecture Series which took place on Wednesday 2 March 2011 on the Muckleneuk campus. We will bring you in-depth coverage of this lecture later this week.
