Division: Audio and Video Conference

Introduction

The Audio and Video Conferencing division is responsible for developing, deploying and maintaining - Audio and video conferencing infrastructure for teaching and learning at the university. The main objective of this division is to contribute towards the development and delivery of an appropriate and integrated technology- enhanced learning environment to service learners in both urban and rural areas. Video conferencing is a two-way audio and video communication system that allows participants at different locations to view and hear one another in real time by means of video cameras, television monitors, interactive smart-boards and microphones by using the telephone lines or internet network. An example of video conferencing is communication between students and lecturers or between groups of students.

Benefits of Video and Teleconferencing

  • Ability to interact with people at remote locations without incurring expenses, for example, travel, time and accommodation, and so forth
  • It provides face- to- face live (real time) transmission 
  • Capability to reach a large and widespread audience (widening participation)
  • Capability to connect multiple sites simultaneously at remote areas
  • Sessions can be recorded, saved, edited and archived
  • It can be streamed live for viewing at the student’s convenience
  • The system can integrate with standard VC, desktop VC (such as Web conferencing or WebEx, Skype) smart phones and HD VC such as telepresence and movie (HD web cam + laptop)

Video and teleconference bookings

Bookings can be made using an online booking system that is accessible through staff online (e-connect). The system is calendar-based and easy to use with a help function to assist first- time users.

  • unions
  • Unisa  partners (local and international institutions)

Video conference facilities can be used for the following:

  • group discussion
  • tutorials Classes
  • oral examinations
  • training
  • workshops
  • interviews
  • staff assemblies
  • meetings
