Sales and marketing have long gone hand in hand as subject fields. ``Sales'' is often regarded as an integral tool for the successful marketing of any product or service. The fact is that no matter how good the companys' marketing, until a sale takes place, there is no income!

The Course in Introduction to Sales and Marketing provides students with a background to the field of marketing and specific skills in selling. The two modules in this course address the following key areas:

  • Marketing fundamentals
  • Relationship marketing
  • Customer behaviour
  • Market segmentation and positioning
  •  Sales techniques
  •  Customer identification and profiling
  •  Presentation skills
  •  Communication skills

Modules:

  • PISM01V: Introduction to Marketing    
  • PISM02W: Sales Principles

Duration
Six months

Registration requirements
A National Senior Certificate or equivalent qualification and/or applicable experience.

Evaluation and examination
Students will be assessed on the strength of one assignment per module. The assignments will count towards a final year mark.

Summative assessment in the form of one two-hour examination per module will take place during May/June or October/November at official Unisa examination centres. Students must obtain a minimum of 50% in the examination to be successful. A mark of 75% constitutes a distinction.

Certificate

On successful completion of all the modules, students will be awarded a certificate by  post.

  • 24 credits

Language
The study material is presented in English.

Teaching method
Distance education by means of a study guide, prescribed textbook, tutorial letters and assignments.

Registration, commencing date and fees

  • First semester: 23 January (registration takes place from 28 November 2011 until 23 January 2012).
  • Second semester: 13 July (registration takes place from 18 June until 13 July 2012)

The course fee is R800 per module which includes tutorial matter, tuition and examination fees. Students will have to purchase the textbook themselves. The total fee of R1600 is payable on receipt of a student number.
