Academic dress

In keeping with university traditions, you must wear the correct academic dress when attending your graduation ceremony. Failure to do so could result in you not being admitted. Please ensure that your hood or neckband is the correct colour and design for your qualification.

Ordering your academic dress

Please complete the order form provided in your graduation pack and forward it to the approved supplier of academic dress. Do not return the form to the university.

Graduands
Graduands must wear an academic cap, gown and hood. The hood may only be worn after your degree has been conferred.
Bachelors, honours and master’s degrees

• Gown - black, the same pattern as a Master of Arts gown of the University of Oxford or Cambridge
• Cap - black with a black tassel

Doctoral degrees

• Gown - cardinal red with open sleeves lined in cardinal red
• Cap - cardinal red with a tassel in the colour of the college concerned

Diploma candidates

An academic gown and neckband must be worn. Diploma candidates do not wear a cap. The gown is black, the same pattern as that of a Master of Arts gown of the University of Oxford or Cambridge. The neckband is not draped during the ceremony. All candidates should wear the neckband when entering the hall.

Academic dress supplier details

The gown for all bachelors, honours and master’s degrees of the university shall be black and of the same pattern as that of the Master of Arts of the University of Oxford or Cambridge.

The gown for all doctors degrees shall be cardinal red with open sleeves lined in cardinal red.

The academic cap for all doctors degrees shall be cardinal red with a tassel in the colour of the college concerned.

For all other degrees the academic cap shall be black with a black tassel.
