My wellnessThe modern trend in thinking about human development emphasises that one needs to improve one’s quality of life on a daily basis. This has to do with your and my wellness. Wellness is not just the absence of disease. The human being seeks integration and an interconnectedness with people and things. Although there is an instinctive drive towards wholeness and health, we do not always listen to what our bodies are telling us. Despite knowing better, we often continue doing things we know are harming us. These things can also hamper our academic progress. How can you and I strive to eliminate those actions that affect us negatively?Wellness can be compared to a wheel that needs to run smoothly. The spokes keep the wheel intact, and should be of equal length to ensure a smooth ride.
This wheel consists of eight spokes, each representing one of the important areas in your life that needs to be developed in order to eliminate worry and stress and to be fully well. It is vitally important to ensure that all the spokes are in good order, otherwise you are in for a bumpy ride. As you work through the different areas of wellness, you will be asked to evaluate your level of satisfaction in each area. You will also be asked whether you feel you need to improve on certain areas. If needed, you will be prompted to think of ways to improve your wellness in a specific area. Remember, there is no right or wrong answer. This is an individual exercise. Once you have identified steps to improve a specific area, you are in a position to set goals to strive towards.
