Postgraduate qualifications

MA (SS) degree

In order to obtain this degree students must be able to undertake independent research on a topic they wish to specialise in, and put it in writing in thesis format. The minimum period for this degree is two years. The University appoints a study-leader and joint study-leader under whose supervision the research is undertaken and completed. After completion it is examined by a panel of examiners.

Please note: In order to obtain this degree students must be able to attend classes on the main campus in Pretoria for the first two years and passing the examinations in the various papers at the end of each year. This is followed by a thesis of limited scope on a research topic of the student’s choice that must be completed and submitted for examination. A selection procedure is involved in this degree and takes place in October/November.

This tutored degree extends over a minimum period of three years. There is a choice between two fields of speciality, namely therapeutic work with individuals, couples and families; or community work. The focus is on the education, training and practising of advanced knowledge and skills in the area of therapeutic or community work. Intensive education and supervision are offered by lecturers who specialised in the various disciplines.
