College of Science, Engineering & Technology

Wishes you A Very Happy Festive Season!

2012 has been a very eventful and exciting year for our college. We have seen the completion of the engineering laboratories and the near-completion of the science laboratories at our soon-to-be new home, the Florida campus.

In terms of our community engagement agenda, our activities received a huge boost from the collective thinking on community engagement in an ODL environment emanating from last year’s community engagement indaba. I-SET was strengthened by the introduction of ODL-appropriate initiatives; MathsEdge introduced a research component with partner schools; and GirlPower saw increased scientific interactions with female learners from Atteridgeville.

In terms of our tuition, as a college we are very excited about the university’s move towards online learning. This move has provided the college with a huge opportunity to explore innovative ways of delivering science, engineering and technology online. We believe that, as the College of Science, Engineering and Technology, we should be at the forefront of creating and implementing online learning tools that are appropriate to our disciplines.

In terms of our research indaba, our Month of Innovation united scholars from inside and outside Unisa around the theme of “Transforming thoughts into reality”. Throughout that month, various seminars were presented by both invited guests and our CSET researchers, with the aim of presenting unique insights relating to the theme.  The College also saw an increase in the number of it’s newly NRF rated researchers. Indeed 2012 has been eventful and exciting for the College.

This first edition of Niche online brings to life the College’s commitment to the University’s organizational architecture. We believe that the newsletter will not only showcase the College’s initiatives for 2012, but will provide an exemplar of communicating digitally.

Season’s Greetings and Happy 2013 to all.
