Unisa Law Clinic Internal Moot Competition

The unisa Law Clinic Moot court competition was held on the 21st September 2012.Group of students were selected and trained in the art of litigation (mooting skills) which included several learning sessions were students were mentored by the moot Court committee on Court etiquette and legal drafting. This prestiquous event was held at the Senate Hall and was presided over by JudgeFrans Legodi,Judge Dion Basson,Mr Billy Gundelfinger,Advocate Roy Lekala and Mr Lawrence Monnye from Unisa Private Law department.

The students were divided in to two groups of Applicants and Respondents which comprised ofseven (7) students from each group. The issue in dispute focused on a detailed concept relating to Private Law (Delictual Claim).The heads of arguments were submitted to the judge before the competition date and students were given a chance to present their argument .The Judges deliberated on their arguments and pronounced the winning team. Prior to the handing down of the verdict, Judge Legodi complimented the student lawyers on their wit and applauded their brilliant presentation. He added that he would not be able to differentiate between the practicing lawyer and student lawyer if they were in his court.

Numerous Awards were awarded: The best Oralist price was awarded to Ms  Phindile Shongwe (from the Respondents); the 1st Runner up was Ms  Nosipho Ntlemesa (Respondents) and 2nd runner up was Ms Kenmour Simango (Applicants);Respondent were the winning team and the applicants were the best heads of arguments; the most improved student was from Applicants Mr Sibusiso Mtshweni.

The student were awarded prices from various sponsors which includes amongst others the following: Juta;Lexis Nexis; LEAD (Law Society of the Northern Province); PPs; Oxford and Unisa .
