Dr Maphunye is the former manager of the Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa’s Research and Knowledge Management division in Pretoria. He is a scholar, researcher and intellectual in public administration and political sciences. His areas of research interest include administrative or bureaucratic reform, comparative public administration, gender and human rights issues in the public sector, human resource management and African politics, particularly elections and post-independence bureaucratic performance in developing countries. According to Dr Maphunye, “Being a Chair has to do with issues around research, community engagement, being part of academic citizenship and of course tuition and supervision.”
Unisa is proud to be the only university in the country which has such a Chair. “ Establishing this Chair is highly
commendable in a sense that it is one of a kind, having a Chair which says Women Investment Portfolio Holdings, Brigalia Bam Chair. We as Unisa are proud to be associated with Dr Bam’s name because of her knowledge and experience of running elections, hence Unisa used both names,” said Dr Maphunye.
