Professors Narend Baijnath (Pro Vice-Chancellor), Kgethi Phakeng (Vice-Principal: Research and Innovation) and Greg Cuthbertson (Executive Dean: College of Graduate Studies) and the Institute for Social and Health Sciences (ISHS) hosted an esteemed delegation from UEM. The delegation including Professors Quilambo (Rector, UEM), Mondjana (Vice-Rector, UEM) and Sidat (Dean, Faculty of Medicine), participated in a week long (March 4-8) site visits and seminars on violence and injury and violence prevention and emergency care as well as discussions on the achievements of the decade long collaboration.
A mid-day signing ceremony was hosted by Prof Baijnath on Wednesday 7th March to extend the MOU for a further three years. Professor Baijnath welcomed the UEM delegation and said “the presence of the Rector and Vice-Rector demonstrated UEM’s firm commitment and contributions to the collaboration”. He added that Unisa was committed to growing the collaboration and that he was in firm support of leading a Unisa delegation to UEM.
In earlier discussions on 7th March Professor Phakeng suggested that the current collaboration be grown around specific mutually agreed on agreements, especially since there is tremendous scope for further exchanges in ODL, science education, post-graduate training, interdisciplinary research and joint post-graduate offerings, in addition to the existing violence and injury prevention work that the Institute for Social and Health Sciences conducts in Mozambique. These areas of mutual interest emerged out of discussions co-facilitated by Professors Greg Cuthbertson and Mohamed Seedat in the College of Graduate Studies.
