CGS host a seminar on “Human Trafficking”

Prof Carol Allais from the Department of Sociology

At a seminar on Human Trafficking in South Africa and the Region: Current Trends, Data Collection and Knowledge Gaps, Prof. Carol Allais from the Department of Sociology drew attention to the limited literature on the subject of human trafficking in South African, particularly the lack of research-based publications.

While the largest focus, globally and locally, is on the trafficking of women and children for sexual exploitation, the trafficking of men and boys attracts very little attention. Various forms of trafficking have been identified in South Africa, but most of our knowledge derives from anecdotal sources. In order to respond more effectively to the problem, concrete data based on sound empirical data is crucial.

The seminar was well attended. In addition to Unisa colleagues and students, attendees included delegates from law enforcement, NGOs, FBOs and members of the diplomatic community.
