In opening the meeting, Ms Edith Waziri, the Kenya Chapter Convenor and MC of the function, requested that alumni first start by greeting each other the “Kenyan way”, which means greeting the person who is next to you. She further indicated that her major ambition is to grow the Chapter into a mega one. Kenya Chapter’s projects for the year include the selling of textbooks, building a water tank for a community, and mentoring and life skills projects.
Ms Amanda Masina, Unisa’s Alumni Relations Manager, welcomed alumni and highlighted the functions of the Alumni Relations Office. She also alluded to the 2015 Unisa Strategic Objective 6.6, namely “mobilising the Alumni in the service of the University”, which is a quest to mobilise alumni in support of both Unisa and alumni plans.
In looking at the highlights, Ms Masina expressed her appreciation for the chapter’s convenor who has helped promote the university to alumni in Kenya – this will enable her to be their voice in the upcoming November 2012 annual convenors’ workshop in South Africa. She thus encouraged alumni to continue to be the ears on the ground for the university.
After the playing of the 2011 Chancellor’s Dinner DVD, Prof Louis Molamu, University Registrar, bid farewell to alumni as he is about to retire from Unisa. According to Prof Molamu, the new Registrar will resume his duties in September 2012. Alumni were engaged on convocation matters and on the developments within the university.
Guest speaker, Mr Moses Mwaura, Regional Director of the Enablis Entrepreneurial Network East Africa, help the attention of the audience with his address about “Opportunities missed”.
In conclusion, Ms Amanda Masina delivered the vote of thanks to alumni and everyone who had contributed to making the meeting the success it was.
