media releases - The honorable Chief Justice of South Africa Pius Langa will rec16 May 2006 The honorable Chief Justice of South Africa Pius Langa will receive an honorary degree from the University of South Africa on Wednesday 17 May 2006. The degree of Doctor of Laws (honoris causa) will be conferred to Chief Justice Langa at a ceremony to be held in the ZK Matthews Great Hall at 18h00. The award is in recognition of Chief Justice Langa’s remarkable contribution in the advancement of justice and human rights. Justice Langa was appointed to the position of chief justice of the Republic of South Africa in 2005 after serving as a Constitutional Court judge from 1994. In between, he became the deputy president of the Constitutional Court in 1997 and advanced to become Deputy Chief Justice in 2001. He started his law career with the Department of Justice as an interpreter but rose through various grades until he became a prosecutor and magistrate. In 1977, Justice Langa was admitted as an advocate of the Supreme Court in Natal and practised at the Durban Bar until he attained the rank of senior counsel in 1994. Justice Langa served as an executive member on several associations including the Democratic Lawyers Association. In 1998 he chaired the Langa Commission which was tasked with probing the Lesotho elections on behalf of Southern African Development Community (SADC).
