Unisa to honour Mr Danny Jordaan

Mr Danny Jordaan, Chief Executive Officer of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, will receive an honorary degree from the University of South Africa on 25 April 2006.

Members of the media are invited to attend the ceremony which will be held in the ZK Matthews Great Hall at the Pretoria Main Campus at 18h00.

The degree of Doctor of Admin (honoris causa) will be awarded to Mr Daniel Alexander Jordaan in recognition of his exceptional contribution to the administration of South African sport by helping to achieve non-racialism, playing a leadership role in the management of football and winning the bid for South Africa to host the FIFA World Cup in 2010.

Mr Jordaan used his various leadership positions in sport administration to change the circumstances to the benefit of all stakeholders. As Chief Executive Officer of the South African Football Association, his key responsibility was the commercialisation of South African football by raising the revenue from 3,2million US dollars to 35 million dollars. During his term of office as CEO of SAFA, South African football qualified for two consecutive FIFA World Cup tournaments and four consecutive African Nations Cup tournaments.

Mr Jordaan’s most notable achievement as sport administrator was the competent manner he led the two FIFA World Cup bids as chief executive officer. After South Africa narrowly lost out to Germany in the race to host the 2006 World Cup,  the dedication of Mr Jordaan and his team was rewarded when FIFA awarded the 2010 World Cup tournament to South Africa. This was a historic occasion as it was for the first time that the biggest sport tournament in the world was awarded to the continent of Africa.
