media releases - Prof Pityana to serve second term as UNISA's principal30 MARCH 2006 The Council of the University of South Africa is delighted to announce the re-appointment of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Nyameko Barney Pityana, for another term until his reaches retirement in 2010. The announcement was made after the Council met Thursday evening (30 March). In re-appointing Prof Pityana, Dr Mathews Phosa, the chairperson of Unisa’s Council, said the members of Council recognised his leadership in achieving the Council’s objectives of the merger. Council acknowledges the groundbreaking steps the University has made under his institutional leadership over the past five years, and is aware of how imperative it is for this momentum and direction to continue if Unisa is to achieve its objectives as set out in the 2015 Strategic Plan. They recognised his valuable contribution in setting the agenda for transformation to achieve these objectives. Dr Phosa said he and other members of Council, in appointing Prof Pityana for a further term, looked forward to a continued dynamic working relationship with him in attaining the University’s goal of becoming the African university in the service of humanity.
