media releases - Registration increase at UNISA

19 January 2006

The University of South Africa is experiencing a significant increase in the number of student registrations this year.

The University opened for registration in December which was a quiet month, but since 4 January when Unisa opened after the festive season break, there has been a surge of registrations, particularly through the internet and students coming to the main campus and other centres.

From 2 December to 11 January Unisa registered 32 600 students although the latest numbers have reached over 50 000.

An average of 2 000 students per day have visited the main campus to register.  Internet registrations are currently over 16 000. The number of web registrations last year for the same period were 12 536.

Pretoria has the highest number of registrations:  By 11 January 21 948 had registered on the main campus, followed by Kwazulu Natal with 4 505. Western Cape had registered 2 914.

Final figures for first semester registration will only be available after registrations close at the beginning of April.

First semester registrations close 9 February and students who wrote exams in January or February have until 16 March.  Postgraduate students who wrote exams in the first two months of this year have until 4 April to register.

Unisa is open for registrations on the following Saturdays: 21 and 28 January, 4 and 25 February, 4 and 11 March. The second semester registration period opens on 6 June 2006.

Students can go online at: www.unisa.ac.za for further information.
