media releases - Prof Bhekinkosi Ntuli to receive an Honorary degree from UNISA16 September 2005 Prof Bhekinkosi Ntuli, a top academic and author, will receive an Honorary degree from the University of South Africa on Monday 19 September 2005. The degree of Dlitt et Phil (honoris causa) will be offered to Prof Ntuli in recognition of his contribution to Zulu literature. The ceremony will be held at the University’s Muckleneuk Campus in the ZK Matthews Great Hall at 18h00. Prof Ntuli, now retired, was the first black person to be appointed an associated professor at UNISA in 1979. He spent 32 years of his life as a lecturer, focussing on the fields of linguistics and literature. He was the first among South African literature experts to teach and read papers on the application of African languages to theories of Modernism and Marxism, among others. Prof Ntuli has published 16 volumes of short stories and essays as author, co-author or editor. He has also translated numerous manuals and books into IsiZulu, the most noteworthy being Nelson Mandela’s Long walk to Freedom ( Uhambo olude oluya enkululekweni). The ceremony is part of the University’s Spring Graduations where over 2 000 students will graduate. The graduation ceremonies will take place in Pretoria, Durban and Cape Town.
