media releases - ACDE Conference at UNISA8 AUGUST 2005 ACDE Conference at UNISA Africa’s policymakers in education will descend on South African soil on Wednesday to attend the inaugural annual Conference of the African Council for Distance Education. Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka is expected to deliver the opening address. The three day gathering at the University of South Africa in Pretoria will also be attended by a host of dignitaries including the Honourable Minister of Education in South Africa, Mrs Naledi Pandor and ministers of education from Benin, Mali, Ivory Coast, Uganda, Zimbabwe and Nigeria. The Conference’s main aim is to provide an opportunity for exploring partnerships and strategic cooperation, to participate in setting priorities and agenda for the future of open and distance education on the African continent. The ACDE was established in 2004 at an international conference in Kenya. Unisa Principal and Vice-Chancellor Professor Barney Pityana was elected as its first chairperson. The ACDE is a continental body that provides a forum for bringing together all African universities and other higher education institutions, which are committed to expanding access to quality education and training through open and distance learning.
