media releases - Unisa celebrations for 10 years of democracy - honorary doctorat

The University of South Africa is planning a week of festivities to celebrate ten years of democracy that will include a film festival of South African films produced in the past decade. There will also be exhibitions, books launches, lectures and a poetry evening at Cloghereen, as well as a range of women’s day activities honouring women at Unisa who have distinguished themselves.

 To mark this anniversary, Council has also approved that honorary degrees be awarded to the following eminent South Africans:

  • Dr Frene Ginwala  D Litt et Phil for contributions to our parliamentary democracy;
  • Chief Justice Arthur Chaskalson LLD for contributions to our constitutional democracy;
  • Ms Brigalia Bam D Litt et Phil for contributions to our electoral democracy.

 The Special Graduation Ceremony is scheduled to take place on  Saturday, 14 August 2004.

To mark the end of the transitional phase of the new University of South Africa, the Interim Council also resolved to award honorary degrees to the former Chancellors of the two merged institutions:

  • The Hon Judge BM Ngoepe  Judge President: Transvaal Provincial Division of the High Court of South Africa, former Chancellor of the University of South Africa;
  • The Hon Dr ZST Skweyiya, MP, Minister of Social Development, former Chancellor of the Technikon Southern Africa.

The date for the conferment of the degrees has not yet been agreed.

As soon as arrangements for the 10 years of democracy celebrations are finalised, details will be made know.
