media releases - Prof Pityana receives UN award

The Director General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation recently informed Prof Pityana of this award by letter saying: "This decision was taken in recognition of your long-standing activities in the field of human rights and the struggle against racism, particularly in your capacity as the first president of South African’s Human Rights Commission and as a scientist and educator.  Undertaken in a difficult context, your tireless work for the respect of human rights will serve as an example for all those involved in their promotion and protection.”

The official award ceremony will be held in Mexico City at the end of February.
