media releases - The Great Pan Africanist, Archie Mafeje to be honoured at Unisa

Professor Archie Mafeje, the great Pan Africanist and renowned African intellectual, will be honoured at the main campus of the University of South Africa (Unisa) on Wednesday, 27 March 2013.

Unisa’s Archie Mafeje Research Institute (AMRI), in collaboration with the Africa Institute of South Africa (AISA), will host a symposium and memorial lecture in honour of this towering African intellectual. The lecture and symposium are both annual events held to celebrate the memory of an inspiring figure who worked tirelessly to highlight the importance of being African through self-knowledge, self-control and self-emancipation.

The symposium will take place under theme “Understanding African Social Formations, African Families and Social Policy”, with the keynote address delivered by respected African intellectual, Professor Jimi O Adesina, who heads the Sociology Department at the University of the Western Cape. Mr Wiseman Magasela, Deputy Director-General at the Department of Social Development, and Professor Pearl Mpilo Sithole from the University of KwaZulu-Natal will be the panellists.

Professor Nomthetho Simelane from the University of Swaziland will deliver the keynote address during the memorial lecture, themed ‘Archie Mafeje, a Great Pan Africanist’, with Professor Vukizikhungo Mzamane paying tribute to the late Professor Mafeje.
