media releases - SA's oldest teacher to deliver a lecture at Unisa

Mrs Nontsikelelo Qwelane, South Africa’s oldest teacher, is set to impart her knowledge of the education sector at a lecture to be held at Unisa this week.

At 92, Mrs Qwelane is the oldest teacher in South Africa. Her teaching career started 73 years ago in 1940 and has seen her teach at various schools in the Eastern Cape, Western Cape, Gauteng and Mpumalanga.

She is a well qualified educator, with a Bachelor of Arts degree, a Higher Diploma in Education, an Honours Bachelor of Education degree as well as a Master of Public Administration degree.

She teaches Geography at the Metropolitan College in White River, Mpumalanga.

Her lecture at Unisa will focus on the education of black South Africans from the time of the missionary schools to the post- apartheid education system.
