Background:

The University of South African (Unisa) and the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) are marking major milestones this year, with Unisa celebrating its 140th year while the OAU turns 50 this May.

In marking these major events, Unisa and the Thabo Mbeki Foundation decided to jointly host a public dialogue where the historical and contemporary challenges facing the African continent will take centre stage.

The panel of pre-eminent academics, scholars and thinkers from Africa and the Diaspora, will conduct an honest assessment of the myriad of challenges facing the continent; as well as propose lasting solutions to these challenges.

The contribution made by the University of South (Unisa) in South Africa, Africa and the world at large, in its 140 years in existence, will also form part of the conversation.

Also, since the establishment of the OAU in May 1963, the African continent has made significant progress but has also suffered numerous setbacks. Therefore, the dialogue will attempt to answer the question: What should be done to realise Africa’s renaissance?
