media releases - Makhanya appointed to EXCO of HETL

In a move that confirms Unisa’s growing international stature, Principal and Vice Chancellor Professor Mandla Makhanya has been appointed to the Executive Committee of the International Higher Education Teaching and Learning Association, referred to as HETL.

Professor Makhanya is part of a quartet of international scholars from South Africa, Canada, the UK and the USA who are joining the governing body of HETL. They will serve for a period of three years.

HETL is a New York-based non-profit organisation whose purpose is to bring together higher education professionals and thought leaders from around the world to dialogue, network and collaborate on issues relevant to teaching and learning in higher education.

Its membership represents over 130 countries from every continent except Antarctica; every discipline, function and level as well as every institutional type and mission within higher education.

Its vision is to generate new knowledge and to advance the scholarship and practice of teaching and learning in higher education. It works with and supports individual educators, institutions, associations, centres and other relevant groups interested in improving teaching and learning in higher education.

The Executive Committee is comprised of 15 members who form the core governance team of HETL.12 of these members come from the various boards and serve on the Board of Directors, while three are ex officio members who represent management. Each year, four new members are appointed to the Board of Directors. The Executive Committee is the policy-making and strategy-approving body of HETL and is ultimately responsible for ensuring that the organisation fulfills its stated values, mission and vision.

Patrick Blessinger, HETL Executive Director and Editor confirmed the appointment yesterday (19 June 2012) and also said that the organisation is looking forward to working with the new members in achieving its vision.
