Unisa welcomes ruling against Prof. Sono

The University of South Africa has welcomed yesterday’s judgment by the North Gauteng High Court to dismiss the application for leave to appeal by former Unisa Council Member, Professor Themba Sono with costs.

Professor Sono, a former Council member and President of the Convocation, previously brought an application before the North Gauteng High Court in September 2010 to have the appointment of Professor Mandla Makhanya as Principal and Vice Chancellor reviewed, but it was dismissed with costs in favour of the University. It was this ruling of the court that Professor Sono wanted to appeal, but his application for leave to appeal yesterday was once again dismissed with costs in favour of the university.

‘As far as we are concerned, the court was correct from the beginning in its finding that the Council had followed the correct procedure during the appointment process. We hope that this matter can now be laid to rest and we can proceed unhindered with the task of rendering an education service to the people of this country and the Continent’ , said Unisa spokesperson, Martin Ramotshela.
