media releases - Jonas Gwangwa to receive honorary doctorate from UnisaThe University of South Africa will confer an honorary degree of Doctor of Literature and Philosophy to South African music legend and struggle veteran, Jonas Gwangwa. This is in recognition of his distinguished record of service and achievement in the development of African music and for his contribution to the struggle for liberation in South Africa. The degree, approved by the Unisa Council, will be conferred during a graduation ceremony to be held at the Unisa Muckleneuk Campus, ZK Matthews Great Hall, Preller Street, Pretoria at 18:00 on Thursday, 03 May 2012. Jonas Gwangwa is a living legend of South African music who has played a leading role not only in the evolution of South African music, but in ensuring that it is widely known and respected internationally. He was also instrumental in turning arts and culture, particularly music, into one of the pillars and avenues for advancing the struggle for freedom in South Africa. He remains an influential part of the arts and culture fraternity; and a highly sought-after recording and performing artist in a democratic South Africa. Unisa Chancellor Judge Bernard Ngoepe and Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mandla Makhanya will preside over the graduation ceremony.
