Unisa Radio to edutain students and staff on Unisa Radio Day

Unisa students, staff, management and invited guests will be feted with a variety of edutainment activities during the Unisa Radio Day to be held on Thursday, 26 April 2012. The event will take place in the Enoch Sontonga Concert Hall, Unisa Sunnyside Campus and will run from 12:00 until 14:00.

Organised by Unisa Radio, this event is aimed at bringing the radio’s listenership (Unisa students and staff) up to speed with developments and progress made by the radio station since its inception in 2008.

The day’s programme will include drumming, poetry and drama performances; as well as awards for best newsreader, producer and presenter for the radio station.

Unisa’s PRO Vice Chancellor, Professor Narend Baijnath and the Executive Dean of the College of Human Sciences, Professor Rosemary Moeketsi will deliver the keynote speeches at the event.

The radio station has grown in leaps and bounds since its inception, steadily approaching its ultimate goal to reach a vast majority of Unisa students through mobile and online streaming. It also ensures that its programming focuses on academic content, including educational shows, career guidance, job opportunities, student lifestyle issues, student entertainment, student support programmes as well as other relevant campus news. In the last six months, the listenership has grown from 6 212 to a staggering 28 300.

Unisa Radio is in the process of building brand new broadcast studios and offices on Unisa’s Sunnyside campus in Pretoria. It is the radio station’s aim to provide training and practical experience to Unisa students interested in a career in broadcasting. They will be training students in every aspect of radio broadcasting, from presenting, content producing and news reading to programming and scheduling.

Unisa Radio has a team of seasoned professionals and committed student volunteers who are committed to building the radio station into a roaring success. It has also just recently acquired a portable Outside Broadcast (OB) unit, which makes broadcasting from remote locations incredibly easy. The station is accessible via streaming audio, from any location with cellular phone reception, within minutes.

‘I believe that streaming audio is the future of radio worldwide. As soon as technology allows consumers to receive streaming audio in their cars, we will be able to compete with anybody on a level playing field’, says Francois Van Heerden, Unisa Radio Station Manager.
