Launch of the College of EducationOn Friday, 16 March 2012 Unisa will officially launch a new College of Education which will revolutionise the teaching profession in South Africa. Not only will this college play a leading role in the education and training of prospective teachers, but it will also be a provider of continued training and development for existing teachers. The college, originally established in April 2011, is Unisa’s response to a clarion call for public and private individuals and institutions to play an active role in national efforts to find lasting solutions to the country’s education challenges, particularly with regard to ensuring the production of adequately trained teachers. Originally operating as a school within the College of Human Sciences, the new fully-fledged college now aims to ‘re-imagine the research, teaching and study of education as a discipline’ as it seeks to produce top quality teachers for the country. Unisa, which has one of the largest teacher education footprints in the country, has always been at the forefront of training and development in the education sector, with 50 per cent of the country’s current crop of teachers coming from the institution. Professor Mandla Makhanya, the Principal and Vice Chancellor of Unisa, cordially invites members of the media to the official launch. The Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training, Professor Hlengiwe Mkhize will deliver the keynote address.
