media releases - Archie Mafeje Memorial LectureOn Wednesday, 28 March 2012, Unisa’ s Archie Mafeje Research Institute (AMRI) and the Africa Institute of South Africa (AISA) will celebrate the memory of the legendary African intellectual Professor Archie Mafeje, an inspiring figure who worked tirelessly to highlight the importance of being African through self-knowledge, self-control and self-emancipation. The 2012 Memorial Lecture, the third to be held in honour of Mafeje, is aimed at creating greater awareness about the hegemonic relationships still affecting research and critical academic thinking in Africa. It will also feature an exhibition showcasing the life and times of Archie Mafeje as an African anthropologist. Dr Adebayo Olukoshi, Director of the United Nations African Institute for Economic Development and Planning (IDEP), Senegal, will deliver the keynote speech under the theme : ‘ Professor Archie Mafeje – A great Pan-African : A Call Upon African Scholars and Policymakers in the 21st Century’. there will also be papers presented by Professor Francis Wilson, Emeritus Professor of Economics, University of Cape Town, as well as Professor Puleng Lenka Bula, CODESRIA Executive Member and Director of Projects /Advisor in the Office of the Principal and Vice Chancellor at Unisa.
