media releases - Unisa donates cellphones to patients in Kalafong

Unisa's College of Economic and Management Science has donated mobile phones to seriously injured patients at Kalafong Hospital in order to bring them closer to their families.

As part of the college’s Going Green project, a total of 35 cellphones and chargers were donated to the hospital’s spinal unit patients by Prof Valiant Clapper, Deputy Executive Dean of CEMS, and Project Leader, Ms Tracey Cohen.

Mrs Dolly Msimango of the hospital's spinal unit said the patients are often hospitalised and bedridden for as long as three years as a result of the serious spinal injuries they sustained mainly through road accidents.

"We are very grateful for this gesture by Unisa. Our patients often find it difficult to keep contact with their families and friends who often stay far away and find it difficult travel to see them regularly. We normally have an average of 20 patients at any given time," said Sister Msimango.

Prof Clapper said the Going Green project team identified the need for hospitalised patients to communicate with their loved ones.

"We requested staff in the college to donate their unused cellphones and chargers for this project and we received more than 35 fully-functional mobile phones and chargers. The non-functioning ones will be disposed of in an environmentally friendly way. This is a good way of reaching out to the community and at the same time creating awareness and establishing culture of sustainable green practices," he said.

The college is planning more similar project during the 2011 financial year.
