media releases - Honorary degree on former Constitutional Court judge

On Monday 19 April 2010, UNISA will be conferring an honorary doctorate (LLD hc) on former Constitutional Court Judge, Justice Yvonne Mokgoro, on Monday, for her sterling contributions to our justice system.

At the dawn of the democratic order in SA, Justice Mokgoro was appointed a judge of the newly established Constitutional Court in 1994.  A tireless human rights activist and a former nursing assistant she served extensively as a resource person for non-governmental and community-based organizations focusing on the impact of law on society and on women and children.

She is currently the Chairperson of the South African Law Reform Commission and also sits on many boards. Justice Mokgoro is a member of the International Women’s Association and the International Association of Women Judges, the International Federation of Women Lawyers (as Interim President of the SA Chapter) and the SA Women Lawyers Association.

UNISA will be awarding 62 doctorates during this year’s autumn graduation ceremonies.  In September last year Unisa awarded 59 doctorates – making the total 121, compared to 111 in the same period 2008/2009.

In addition 275 master’s degrees will be awarded; 2 385 postgraduate bachelor’s degrees;  2 786 bachelor’s degrees;  1 252 postgraduate diplomas; 6 276 undergraduate diplomas and certificates and

2 498 undergraduate diplomas will be awarded.

In total 18 429 students will graduate during the University’s current graduations that began on 12 April and will finish on 10 June.

Graduations will be held in Pretoria, Polokwane, Cape Town, Durban, Nelspruit, East London and Bloemfontein.

Member of the media are invited to attend the graduations which begin at 18:00 in the ZK Mathews Hall on Pretoria’s Main Campus.
