media releases - Unisa confers honorary doctorate on Sir John Daniel

On Wednesday 5 May, the University of South Africa will confer an honorary doctorate, DLitt et Phil, on Sir John Daniel, CEO and President of the Commonwealth of Learning (COL). Sir Daniel has five decades of experience in education and promoting learning, particularly in developing countries, and in the field of open and distance learning. His commitment to this field globally earned him a knighthood in 1994.

The COL is based in Vancouver and promotes technology as a means of boosting education in developing countries around the world.

The ceremony will take place at 18:00 in the ZK Matthews Great Hall, 2nd level, Theo van Wijk Building, Pretoria Main Campus, Preller Street, Pretoria. 

UNISA will be awarding 62 doctorates during this yearís autumn graduation ceremonies.  In September last year Unisa awarded 59 doctorates Ė making the total 121, compared to 111 in the same period 2008/2009.

In addition 275 masterís degrees will be awarded; 2 385 postgraduate bachelorís degrees;  2 786 bachelorís degrees;  1 252 postgraduate diplomas; 6 276 undergraduate diplomas and certificates, and 2 498 undergraduate diplomas will be awarded.

In total 18 429 students will graduate during the Universityís current graduations that began on 12 April and will end on 10 June.
