media releases - Four candidates shortlisted for appointment as Unisa's VC
The selection committee involved in the appointment of Unisa’s new Principal and Vice-Chancellor has confirmed a shortlist of four candidates to be considered for possible appointment. Three of them are internal candidates: Professor Narend Baijnath, Vice-Principal: Strategy, Planning and Partnerships; Prof Mandla Makhanya, Pro Vice-Chancellor; Professor David Mosoma, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-Principal: Learner Support and Student Affairs; and Professor Nthabiseng Ogude, Vice-Principal and Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Pretoria. The shortlisted candidates were identified from 12 candidates whose applications had been considered.
The selection committee met on Monday 03 May 2010 to consider the shortlist of candidates which the University’s search committee had prepared on Friday 30 April 2010. The search committee had completed its shortlisting of candidates after the executive committee of Senate had reconvened on 28 April to choose its representative on the search committee.
The selection committee which is a committee of Unisa’s Council, is chaired by Council chairperson Dr Mathews Phosa.
The process of selecting a new Principal and Vice-Chancellor will now continue with public presentations which the shortlisted candidates will make in the ZK Matthews Hall during the morning of 14 May (from 08:30 onwards). University stakeholders, including the institution’s regions throughout the country, will have an opportunity to pose some questions to the candidates that relate to their presentations. Thererafter the selection committee will conduct a thorough interview with each candidate.
An announcement of Unisa’s new Principal and Vice-Chancellor will be made during the week of 21 June as scheduled, following the final decision by Council.
Unisa’s incumbent Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Prof Barney Pityana, retires at the end of this year.
Dr. Mathews Phosa
