media releases - Shortlisted VC candidates make presentations

The process of selecting a new Principal and Vice-Chancellor will continue on 13 May 2010 (and not 14 May 2010 as previously announced).  On that day the shortlisted candidates will make their public presentations from 08:30 onwards in the ZK Matthews Hall, Theo van Wijk Building, Unisa main campus in Pretoria.

University stakeholders, including the institution’s regions throughout the country, will have an opportunity to pose some questions to the candidates that relate to their presentations. Thereafter, the selection committee will conduct a thorough interview with each candidate.

The selection committee involved in the appointment of Unisa’s new Principal and Vice-Chancellor has confirmed a shortlist of four candidates to be considered for possible appointment. Three of them are internal candidates: Prof Narend Baijnath, Vice-Principal: Strategy, Planning and Partnerships; Prof Mandla Makhanya, Pro-Vice-Chancellor; Prof David Mosoma, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-Principal: LearnerSupport and Student Affairs; and Prof Nthabiseng Ogude, Vice-Principal and DeputyVice-Chancellor of the University of Pretoria. The shortlisted candidates were identified from 12 candidates whose applications had been considered.

The selection committee, which is a committee of Unisa’s Council, is chaired by Council Chairperson, Dr Mathews Phosa.

An announcement of Unisa’s new Principal and Vice-Chancellor will be made during the week of 21 June 2010 as scheduled, following the final decision by Council.

Unisa’s incumbent Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Prof Barney Pityana, retires at the end of this year.
