media releases - Unisa purchases mobile service units for R2m to reach out

UNISA has invested R2 million in mobile service units to reach students in rural areas across the country. The university’s acting Principal; Prof David Mosoma received the two mobile services units yesterday from Mercedes-Benz Vans.

During the official handover, Prof Mosoma said through the investment, the university will be able to increase its services to students, including learner support.

“Our students will be able to register on these mobile units. We will also be using them for marketing and student recruitment purposes and other services our students may require,” said Prof Mosoma.

He said the units will assist students in the rural parts of North West, Limpopo, Northern Cape, Free State and Mpumalanga provinces.

The two mobile service units are fitted with satellite dishes and LCD screen. Other information and communication technology equipment will be installed by the UNISA ICT Department.

The students will be able to access the student services web portal, myUnisa and other web -based services.

Meanwhile, the university recently opened tutorial classes for its students in Swaziland to reduce their travelling to Nelspruit in order to attend classes and access services. There are more than 1, 400 Unisa students in Swaziland.

The university is considering opening similar classes and centres around Southern Africa.
