media releases - Unisa re-appoints Chancellor and begins process for appointment

At is recent meeting, the Council of the University of South Africa has unanimously re-appointed Mr Justice Bernard Ngoepe as the University’s Chancellor. 

Council also confirmed that as Prof Barney Pityana’s term of office as Vice-Chancellor will end at the end of 2010 the process for appointing a new Principal and Vice-Chancellor has already started and the position will be advertised  in February.  The search committee will comprise the Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson of Council, a member of the Management Committee, a member of Senate, one Executive Dean, Chairperson of the Human Resources Committee of Council, Chairperson of the Audit and Enterprise Risk Management Committee of Council, one student representative, the Secretary of Council (in a supporting capacity) and the Executive Director: Human Resources (advisor on human resources procedures).

The selection committee includes the Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson of Council, a member of the Management Committee,  two members of Senate, two members of the Institutional Forum, two union representatives and seven external members of Council, and the Secretary of Council (in a supporting capacity).

The selection committee will shortlist a maximum of five candidates in April.  The shortlisted candidates will be interviewed in May after which the names of the recommended as well as the other candidates will be submitted to Senate and the Institutional Forum for consideration.  Thereafter the list will also be submitted to the Human Resources Committee of Council.  Council will make an appointment by the end of June 2010.
