The University of South Africa is gearing up for its student representative council elections which will take place next month. “We cannot stress how important it is for all students to participate in this election, the chairperson of the University’s Independent Electoral Commission, Mr Vusi Mkhwanazi said. “Those elected participate at the highest level of governance at the University and represent the needs of the students.” Nominations closed on 31 July. Organisations and individuals who wished to participate regionally were required to obtain 300 and 200 signatures respectively from supporters who are registered students. At national level 500 signatures are required. The University’s Independent Electoral Commission will now verify the nominations and the announcement of those who qualify is expected within the next week. The ballot papers will then be sent out to all registered students. Included will be the manifesto of each organization or individual who is a verified candidate, and addressed and franked envelopes to be returned to Unisa. Ballot boxes will also be available at all regional centres, the Sunnyside Campus in Pretoria, the library and the Vudec Building, cr Skinner and van der Walt in Pretoria.
