Vol 8.2 1997 was the 50th anniversary of the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls.This was celebrated in SA by bringing to this country 4 renowned overseas scholars, who are specialists in the field. They were Brooke (Manchester), Davies (Sheffield), Chanan Eshel (Bar Ilan) and his wife Esther. Not only did they participate in our society congress (Southern African Society for the Study of Semitics), but also participated in three public debates that were conducted each evening at Unisa. During their visits they also addressed public audiences in Johannesburg, Bloemfontein and Cape Town and appeared on radio.
