BA (Creative Writing/Kreatiewe skryfkuns)This programme commenced in the Department of Theory of Literature in 2001 as a specialisation programme for students interested in learning creative writing skills (esp. regarding the writing of poetry, narrative texts and dramatic texts). When the Department of Theory of Literature merged with the Department of Afrikaans in 2004 to form a new department this programme continued and has always proved to be popular with students. The programme was revised in 2005 and is now again in the process of revision in accordance to new Higher Education requirements. The “new” programme will be phased in from 2011 (first level: 2011, second level; 2012, third level: 2013). The structure for the “new’ programme will be available in the Unisa Calendar of 2011 and we will also update the information below when necessary. The programme can be taken in English or Afrikaans. Afrikaanssprekende studente is dus welkom om alle praktiese skryfkunswerk in Afrikaans in te handig en navrae in Afrikaans aan die dosente deur te stuur. NOTE: Students have two options: either to take the whole BA degree programme or else only the Theory of Literature and Practical Creative Writing modules for non degree purposes. Students can register in any of the two semesters for the programme: all modules are presented in both semesters. Students register online at www.unisa.ac.za and should consult this website if they want to know when to register for each semester. No registrations are allowed after the closing date for registrations.
OPTION I: BA (with spec. in Creative Writing) Please also consult the 2010 Unisa Calendar, Part 5, page 20. The following is the full structure of the programme as it is at the moment for students wanting to register for the second semester (2010). Students who are already registered for the programme will simply continue with the programme that they started with. Students already registered for this programme will thus continue with the programme as set out below till 2014. That is, only students registering for the FIRST time for the programme in 2011 will be registering for the “new” programme. Please note that the codes given below are only applicable till the end of 2010 (i.e. second semester registrations) and that new codes will be used from 2011. 5 third-level modules in your Language major II MODULES FOR NON DEGREE PURPOSES Some students already have a BA degree or are only interested in taking the Creative writing modules. On each level students are allowed to take certain modules for non degree purposes. Since our Theory of Literature modules and Practical Creative Writing modules are interlinked (students need the theory to do the practical writing tasks) students must take both the Theory of Literature and Practical Creative Writing modules on all three levels when choosing this option. PLEASE NOTE: The prerequisites within in the main programme are also in effect when taking these modules for non degree purposes. Students retain credits for these modules, i.e. if they would like to continue with the rest of the programme at a later stage they can do that. Please just keep in mind that the “new: programme (from 2011) will eventually be fully phased in and that after 2014 students will not be able to continue with the “old” programme. Students registering in 2011 will automatically be registered for the “new” programme. Students are welcome to contact the coordinator of the programme Prof Marisa Keuris (CoD: Department of Afrikaans and Theory of Literature) if interested in either of the two options.
