Membership

Registered students

Membership of the library begins with registration for the current academic year and is automatically cancelled directly after completion of the final examination of the same year.

Students who qualify for supplementary or aegrotat examinations will be notified to this effect in a letter from the university. These students should submit a copy of this letter to the main or relevant branch library to ensure that their library membership is extended until after the supplementary or aegrotat examinations.

Visitors to the library may purchase a day visitor's card at a cost of R50,00 per visitor (tariffs subject to change).

Persons who accompany students with disabilities are admitted free of charge.

Community service

Individuals with specific research requirements who do not have access to a suitable library may make use the of community service. An Identity document and proof of residence is required.

Costs :There is a basic annual cost of R940, payable at registration. The borrower fee allows the community service member to borrow one book at a time. Extra books may be borrowed with the payment of an additional R600 per book.

Period of registration: 12 months

Admission: A library admission card must be purchased for R45

Number of items: Negotiable

Services offered :

  • photocopies at 45c per page
  • the use of subject databases on campus only - printing at 45c per page (cash only) 
  • due to copyright restrictions, no access is granted to the full text journal articles, scanned in on the Library catalogue
  • an interlibrary loan service at a minimum cost of R35 per transaction
  • the hiring of study carrels, when available
  • information desk services

Community service with research in the field of music

Individuals with research requirements in the field of music who do not have access to a suitable library may make use of this service. The head of their organisation must motivate the request. Individuals who are not affiliated to an approved organisation must contact the music subject librarian for a written motivation.

Costs: There is a basic annual cost of R940, payable at registration. The borrower fee allows the community service member to borrow one book at a time. Extra books may be borrowed with the payment of an additional R600 per item.

Period of registration: 12 months.

Admission: A library admission card is to be purchased for R45

Day visitors

Costs R50 per day, payable at the cashier. The visitor may browse freely among the shelves of the open and reference collections.

Services offered

  • access to the library catalogue and subject databases (there are however, some limits to the usage of these facilities)
  • assistance is available on request
  • information desk services
  • reservation of study carrels at R12 per day, subject to availability (reservations to be made on level 3)
  • photocopy facilities at 45c per page
  • the day visitor can phone 012 429 3206/3313 (one day in advance) to the visit to enquire whether a specific book is available (we will check the shelves). The reason for this is that the R50 entrance fee will not be reimbursed if a particular information source or item is not available at the time of the visit
  • please note that during busy times, workstation usage could be limited to 30 minutes

Diverse users and Donors

Requirements: Membership is granted by the Head: Lending services on the grounds of a written motivation submitted by the applicant. Membership is renewed every year.

Donors: A letter of recommendation from the Head: Public Relations and Development is required.

Donation categories :

  • R500 - R1000 - 4 free library cards per year
  • R1000 - R3000 - 3 months free registration
  • R3000 - 1 year free registration

Admission: A library admission card is to be purchased for R45.00

Number of items: 3 items may be borrowed

Services offered :

  • access granted to all available subject database on campus only - printing at 40c per page
  • due to copyright restrictions, no access is granted to the full text journal articles, scanned in on the Library catalogue

Lecturers of other South African universities/universities of technology
or
Master's and doctoral students of other South African universities/universities of technology

Reciprocal library facilities exist in terms of the IULC (Inter University Library Committee) agreement for national institutions with regard to their lecturers, master's and doctoral students.

Requirements: A letter of recommendation from the chief librarian of the institution concerned is required. Annual renewal of membership should be accompanied by a new letter of recommendation. In the case of music students/lecturers, the letter should clearly state that the research is in the field of music.

Costs: R45 for admission card

Period of registration: Until the end of the academic year

Prospective honours, master's and doctoral students

Requirements

Prospective honours students: a letter of recommendation from the Department of Postgraduate Student Affairs or from the relevant department
Prospective master's and doctoral students: a letter of recommendation from the Head of Department or promoter

Costs: An amount of R295 is payable once special membership of the library has been granted and R145 is payable for the renewal thereof. The receipt should be retained.

Period of registration: 6 months; a further 3-month renewal may be granted upon receipt of a new letter of recommendation.

In the case of a special member registering as a Unisa student:

Proof of the Unisa registration, as well as the original receipt for special membership can be presented at the library, so that the amount(s) paid for special library membership can be refunded. A cheque will be posted to the client within 30 working days from the Unisa finance department.

All outstanding debt on the special membership number must be paid before library membership may be obtained on the student number. Library material will be transferred to the student loan record on request. This must be done in writing confirming that the material is still being used and in the posession of the student.

A new library card with the student number should be obtained if the library is to be visited in person. All regulations will then apply as for postgraduate students.

Admission: Clients requiring physical access to the Unisa Library will need to purchase a Library admission card for an amount of R45

Requirements: Proof of conferment of degree.

Requirements: A letter of recommendation from the Head of Department or the applicant's name appearing on a list, received from the relevant department.

Period: Until the end of the academic year or as stated in letter

Admission: A library admission card must be purchased at R45 (subject to change)

Services :

  • the cost of photocopies of material which may not be borrowed, may be charged to the relevant Department.
  • a subject librarian service is provided
  • Study carrels may be hired, when available

  • Reference works may not be borrowed
Unisa tutors :

Until 31 October of current year - may borrow 4 books at a time

Guest lecturers may only take out up to 8 books with a letter of surety from the relevant department.
