Bridging the gap between academia and the "real world of work" remains a challenge for all institutions of higher education. Prof Makhanya and the College of Economic and Management Sciences hosted Minister Malusi Gigaba at the EMSSA conference.

Prof Makhanya, who is pictured here with Futhi Mthoba, Prof Irene Moutlana, Dr Cardoso and Prof Kuzvinetsa Dzvimbo, spoke at a seminar entitled "African intellectuals: knowledge systems and African futures - challenges, prospects and imperatives" on 17 February 2011.


Prof Mandla Makhanya, in addressing transformation in higher education as part of the Black Management Forum Student Chapter's tranformation seminar, indicated that he didn't think there has ever a time when HE has not been in a state of transformation.

Unisa conferred an honorary degree on Prof Brenda Gourley on 4 April 2011.
