Practical help for Mcom and Dcom studentsPLEASE NOTE THAT THIS PAGE IS CURRENTLY BEING UPDATED TO REFLECT THE MOST UPDATED INFORMATION Introduction Apart from a suitable post graduate degree, admission to MCom and Dcom studies in the Department of Business Management is on the basis of an approved research proposal, prepared after study of appropriate material. Appropriate material includes the basic texts in the field covered by the dissertation or thesis, as well as material on research methodology. This contains a list of recommended material on research methodology and technical writing, examples of approved research proposals, tables of content of completed dissertations/theses, and the guidelines that apply when research proposals and dissertations/theses are examined. Recommended Reading Example Proposal The example proposals have been reproduced as they were presented to the Department (indented paragraphs and other formatting were lost in the conversion). Some proposals contain several errors. What matters is that they were accepted, subject to revision. Treat them as examples of the standard and type of presentation required. The requirements for a research proposal are given in the Guide for M & D students in the management sciences, the booklet that is mentioned in the reading list. In general, the proposal should convince the reader of the scientific merit of the planned research and your ability to complete it. Example tables of content from completed dissertations / theses
Example Chapters 1 from completed dissertations / theses Evaluation Rubrics The rubrics for evaluation of research proposals, masters dissertations and doctoral theses are given in Appendices B, C and D of the General information for M&D students. Sampling and Sample size Note that proposals to use convenience or judgement samples are usually not accepted--the student has to use a scientific sampling method. Here are some guidelines on sample size: Questionnaires If you plan to use a questionnaire survey, example questionnaires are available on request from your supervisor/promotor. Example questionnaires were not included here because they contain graphic material that cannot easily be distributed in this form. Feedback is welcome I would appreciate your response to this effort at providing practical assitance to students. In particular, I would like to know whether it has helped, what else is required, or what should be omitted. I can be contacted at ghyoovg@unisa.ac.za Best wishes with your studies |
