Qualifications: 
BA (Hons) in Development Studies, University of Johannesburg; DLitt et Phil (Development Studies), Unisa.

Research Interests: Gender and development; education and development; human security; aid and development; simulation games in development education; youth and development

Work experience:

She joined Unisa in 1981 as a junior lecturer and was promoted through the ranks to professor in Development Studies. She acted as chair of the Department of Development Studies before accepting a secondment to the position of Manager: Office for Graduate Studies. After 18 months in that position, she was seconded to the position of Director of the School of Social Sciences. She has published 20 articles and chapters in books on a variety of topics, including gender and development and education and development and has successfully supervised more than 15 master’s and doctoral students.

Awards / accomplishments:

She has been a member of a Pan-Commonwealth Quality Assurance team responsible for ensuring quality in the delivery of the Diploma in Youth Development by a variety of tertiary education institutions in Africa. This has given her the opportunity to travel to East and West Africa, to India and Bangladesh, to engage with colleagues in the field of youth and development and to learn from them.

Hobbies:

Travelling; listening to classical music; reading crime novels

Personal vision for the School of Social Sciences:

The six departments that make up the School of Social Sciences are: Development Studies, Health Studies, Political Sciences, Psychology, Social Work and Sociology. These departments are all strong departments with excellent programmes and strong teams of dedicated academics and researchers. There is significant scope for community engagement in these Schools and for contributing to the efforts of the College of Human Sciences to meet our social mandate and contribute to societal transformation. Her aim is to provide academic and administrative support to staff and students alike to help ensure that the School’s students have the quality learning experience to which they are entitled.
