Prof RMH Moeketsi was appointed the Executive Dean of the College of Human Sciences (CHS) in October 2008 after having come up the ranks from the level of Junior Lecturer in 1985 to School Director’s position and later to being the Deputy Executive Dean. She is a C2 NRF rated researcher because of her ground-breaking research in Forensic Linguistics. In her 2 years as Dean of the College, she has introduced pertinent changes aligned to Unisa’s vision to become the  African university in the service of humanity:

  1. One of her major achievements continues to be a transformed staff profile of the college where Blacks and females are now in the majority. More and diverse epistemologies have begun to influence and shape the entire academic agenda especially in research, tuition and community engagement.
  2. The Scholars Development Plan (The Plan) is a 5-pronged comprehensive and intensive development plan, geared at engaging accomplished members of the college in the growth and development of new and emerging both academic and admin personnel. This programme provides a formal year-long Mentorship Programme, a 15-week Leadership Programme as well as an extended Fellowship at another university. The dividends of the Scholars development Plan are in the form of completed Master’s and Doctoral studies, a vibrant research climate, improved outputs, very high staff moral and meaningful and effective learner support. Some aspects of This Programme are already being rolled out to the rest of the university.
  3. Another signature programme introduced by Prof Moeketsi is “Africa Speaks”, a college lecture series that does not only entrench Unisa’s Africanness but also introduces new scholars to accomplished African scholars from the African continent and the Diaspora, potential role models. The underlying theme of the Africa Speaks lectures is to highlight the value and relevance of the social and human sciences in academia and thereby encourage our emerging academics to engage in cutting edge research.
  4. Professor Moeketsi’s focus for 2012 is Community Engagement. She believes in a multi-tiered, partnership-driven approach that will be mutually beneficial to both the university and the communities it seeks to serve.

Areas of focus in the College of Human Sciences:

Her main responsibility is the leadership and management of the College of Human Sciences, one of Unisa’s two biggest colleges and home to 530 permanent staff members in 21 Academic Departments, 8 Centres and 2 Research Institutes.
