Your SkyTo see what the night sky looks like from your location on any date visit the Your Sky page. You can also find out what satellites are visible from your site by going to the Heavens-above Satellite predictions Web page You can do permanent damage to your eyes by looking at the Sun with out proper protection. A better way to see what the Sun looks like, even if its overcast, is to look at the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) real-time images of our most important celestial neighbour. The Sun is not a very good clock according to modern standards. The difference between time according to the actual (or apparent) Sun and a mean Sun (which is the time on your watch) is known as the equation of time. If the position of the apparent Sun is plotted on the sky at a fixed time each day, it traces out a figure-of-eight shape called an analemma. To understand how this pattern is formed visit the analemma Web site. |
