A brief summary of the facilities and equipment of the Chemistry Department is outlined below.

Instruments: the chemistry department has a wide variety of instrumentation available both for teaching and research purposes. This instrumentation includes:

Infrared and Raman Spectroscopy Unit Digilab FTS-7000 spectrometer: equipped with infra-red hyperspectral imaging and microspcopy capabilities	Nuclear Magnetic Spectroscopy Unit Varian Mercury 300 MHz NMR spectrometer: with probehead for automated observation of 1H, 13C, 19F and 31P nuclei	Elemental Spectroscopy Unit Varian AA 1275 Series atomic absorption spectrometer and Perkin-Elmer Optical Emission spectrometer
Thermal Analysis Unit Q500 Thermogravimetric Analyzer and Q100 research grade DSC including 50-position autosampler	Chromatography Unit Shimadzu GC-17A gas chromatograph and Waters HPLC/GPC 2690 separations module with photodiode array, conductivity, laser and refractive index detectors

Laboratories: Unisa's Department of Chemistry is a centre for distance learning and as such does not have many undergraduate laboratories. However, the department does have fully equipped research laboratories for organic, inorganic, physical, polymer and analytical chemistry. Also, there is one large undergraduate laboratory which services first, second and third year students, along with current honours candidates.
