Background InformationSince 1994, policy makers for higher education have expressed grave concern about the quality of distance education. This concern is about the programmes offered, the low through put rates, the high drop-out rates and also the lack of tutorial and other forms of learner support strategies. Unisa recognises the role of learner support services as a critical component of the teaching and learning design in the university. Against this background, one of the key highlights in the Vision and Mission statements is Unisa's commitment to addressing the "needs of the diverse learner profiles by offering relevant learner support, facilitated by an appropriate information and communication technology" (Unisa 2015: An Agenda for Transformation)
